Spicy Meatballs in Coconut Gravy (මීට් බෝල්ස් කිරට)


IMG_9065We are having a beautiful day today. The weather is so nice outside, it would be really nice if I can go for a walk right now. Instead, I am sitting on the floor in our apartment, and having an extra wonderful time with my two kids. My daughter crawls and follows her big brother. She seems to think that her big brother is doing something really important and she probably wants to see what he is doing. Once in a while she comes to me and stands up holding my hand. My son is exploring the whole apartment like it is brand new :). Well, he does find something new every time even though I might not want him to play with them. 🙂

Okay. Let’s talk about real business. I made this Sri Lankan style meatballs curry, I so wanted to share it with you all. The reason is this a popular Sri Lankan meat balls dish. In Sri Lanka, they used to have already spiced meatballs packets. Probably, they still have those. Those two kinds are “kirata” and the other is “mirisata”. “Kirata” means you add coconut milk to the curry. That curry is more in the creamy, sweet side and “mirisata” curry is quite hot and you don’t add coconut milk to it. I really love the taste of this particular meatballs curry so much, I thought of replicating the recipe in my way. We don’t have the privilege of buying the Sri Lankan readymade meatballs packet from the grocery stores here, but  I didn’t want to give up. So, here is what I came up with. I can assure you that this is a meatballs curry that you won’t regret making.


  • 300 g of meat balls- cut in to 2 pieces each
  • 1 medium size onion- sliced
  • One cup of coconut milk
  • 1 tsp of raw curry powder
  • ¼ tsp of turmeric
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 black pepper seeds
  • Some curry leaves
  • 1 or 2 pieces of a pandan leaf
  • Salt to taste
  • Cooking oil


Pour some cooking oil to a pan and heat it under medium heat. Add black pepper seeds, pandan leaf, curry leaves and stir well for about 30 seconds. Then, add the onions. Stir it well until it turns to light golden brown. Then, add curry powder and turmeric powder. Stir it well. It is important that the onions absorb the spices. Now, add the meat balls pieces. At the point, you can add some salt. Stir it well and cover the pan with a lid. Let it cook half way. Stir it again and add the coconut milk. Cover the pan with a lid. Once meatballs are fully cooked, turn off the heat.
