Sri Lankan Style Black Pepper chicken Liver

Today I am sharing a non-vegetarian recipe. It is full of good nutrients and it is very tasty at the same time. When I cook this dish, most of the time, I skip cooking another side dish even there is no gravy. As you already probably know, we Sri Lankan eat steamed rice every single day and this is one of the healthiest non vegetarian dishes all time. Without further bragging describing, I’ll simply go ahead and give you the recipe. Here is Sri Lankan style stir fried chicken liver.

  • 300g of chicken liver
  • 1 medium size onion sliced
  • 2 green chillies (optional)
  • Some curry leave
  • 1 small stick of cinnamon
  • 5 cloves of garlic chopped
  • 3 cardamom
  • ¼ or ½ tsp of freshly crushed black pepper seeds
  • ¼ of chilli flakes
  • Salt to taste
  • Cooking oil

Cut chicken liver in to desired size chunks. Rub some salt on chicken liver. Now, stir fry them under medium heat. Have patience. This step takes time. Stir fry them until the water goes away. Then keep them aside.

In a separate pan, add  curry leaves, cardamom and the cinnamon stick and stir fry for few seconds. Then, add garlic and do the same. Now, it is the time for sliced onions. Stir fry onion until they become tender. You don’t necessarily have to wait until they turn golden brown. If you want to use green chillies, now it’s the time for green chillies. Add freshly crushed pepper, chilli flakes and bit of salt in to the pan. Stir thoroughly for few seconds. Finally add the already stir fried chicken liver pieces in to the mixture and stir everything together. Turn off the heat.

Enjoy !

  1. Interesting dish! We love liver especially Asian liver dishes stir fried are interesting. Your chicken liver dish from sri lanka has similarities to the goan chicken liver dish. But in goa they add coconut vinegar and red chills and no cardamom and curry leaves. Need to try your version soon.
