Black Grams are very nutritious grains filled with magnesium, Iron, Vitamin B 6, dietary fiber and protein. You can eat this grains boiled with little bit of salt as breakfast with coconut and lunu miris, but Sri Lankans also make this nutritious black Gram as a lovely side dish mixed with coconut and some other ingredients which I will be sharing with you in a moment. You can replace black gram with another nutritious grain called mung beans and that will taste as amazing as this dish.
This dish goes very well with steamed rice.
- 200 g of black gram beans or mung beans
- 100 g of freshly grated coconut
- 3 green or red chillies
- 3 cloves of garlic finely chopped
- ½ tsp of turmeric
- ½ tsp of mustard seeds
- 1 small stick of dried cinnamon
- Some curry leaves
- ½ lime or to your taste
- Cooking oil
Wash your beans thoroughly and boil for 30 minutes. Do not forget to add some salt to the water. By using a mortar and pestle, grind all the ingredients except for mustard seeds and oil. Keep in mind that you should add salt before starting to grind. In a large bowl, mix the boiled grains with the ground mixture you just made. Now, warm some oil in a separate pan under medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and wait until they pop. Once you can see they are popping, add the black grams or mung beans mixture to the pan. Mix well. You can remove the pan from the heat within 2 or 3 minutes as the grains are already cooked and other ingredients are edible without cooking. Then, squeeze the lime in to the pan and mix well.
